Do You Know What an Alternator Does?

Your vehicle’s initial charge is created by the battery when you turn over the ignition. It’s enough to get the engine and the electrical system going. From that point, the alternator takes over, and by way of a belt drive connected to the engine, it’s able to keep the entire system charged, including the battery, while the car’s running.

The alternator is one of the easiest parts to deal with on your vehicle. It’s very low maintenance because it doesn’t require regular servicing, and it has a long life of at least 8 years. It causes a problem, though, once it does fail because the system’s electrical is dependent on it to run. You may notice lights that are dim or gauges that don’t work. Once those symptoms appear, it’s time to have it looked at.
